Classical 89.5 KMFA receives first grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting

Austin, Texas – Classical 89.5, KMFA-FM has been awarded its first-ever Community Service Grant (CSG) from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).  The estimated grant for 2007 is $116,000 and will represent the largest single grant ever received by the station.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting is a private, nonprofit corporation created by Congress in 1967 - the same year that KMFA began broadcasting.  The mission of CPB is to facilitate the development of, and ensure universal access to, non-commercial high-quality programming and telecommunications services.

For many years, stations not already receiving funding were not eligible to apply for CSG grants. In 2005, the CPB agreed to open the application process and award funding to 15 new stations from across the U.S.  Having met a variety of legal, managerial, staffing and operational criteria in order to be considered for funding, KMFA is most proud to have demonstrated that it meets and exceeds the levels of community service required.

KMFA General Manager, Jack Allen, said, “This is good stewardship on KMFA’s part - to take action and apply for monies that are deserved and available, and to leverage those funds to assure greater public service. This will make KMFA stronger for the future.”

Upon receiving notification that KMFA was among those stations granted new funding this year, KMFA Board Chairman, Steve Moore of Jackson, Walker LLP said, “The Central Texas community has known for nearly 40 years what a valuable asset KMFA is to the cultural landscape.  This grant affirms the station and recognizes every listener who’s built and continues to sustain it.  It’s a proud moment for all of us.”

CPB funds will allow KMFA to enhance its service to listeners and the community.  Despite the national trends of decreasing public radio listeners, Central Texans will be happy to know that the CPB is willing to partner with KMFA member-contributors, to assure that KMFA will be around for many years to come.

Classical 89.5 KMFA is a listener supported, community radio station – incorporated in 1967 - relying on 85% of its funding from direct listener and business contributions.  A noncommercial, classical format station – KMFA features both local programming and nationally distributed programming from Public Radio International, American Public Media and Minnesota Public Radio.
