About

Join the St. Louis Cantorum in a special event celebrating The Feast of St. Michael the Archangel. Beginning at 7:30 pm in the acoustically perfect chapel of St. Louis Church, 7601 Burnet Road, Austin, Texas, the Thursday, September 29th concert will feature a cappella music by Josquin des Prez, Andrea Gabrieli, Giovanni Pierluigi Palestrina and more. A highlight will be a rare performance of des Prez’s “Missa L’Homme Armé (“The Armed Man”) Super Voces Musicales, his most famous composition during his lifetime, and celebrated for its contrapuntal complexity. Singing will be sopranos Lori Fisher and Deanna Errasuriz, altos Sean Lee and Wraven Godsoe, tenors Antoine Garth (Co-leader) and Jason Gallardo (Co-leader and Director), and bass Trevor Heim. A free-will offering will be taken. In Christianity, the Archangel Michael is the greatest of all the Archangels He is one of the principal angelic warriors, a protector and the leader of the army of God against the forces of evil. "L'homme armé" is especially well remembered today because it was so widely used by Renaissance composers for the Latin Mass. The origins of the importance of the armed man are the subject of various theories, many of which suggest that he represents St. Michael the Archangel. The first concert in the newly formed The King's Concert Series, contact Scott McNulty (scott.mcnulty@st-louis.org or 512-454-0834, ext. 202) for more information about the concert or joining the Friends of St. Louis.
