About

This concert features the San Gabriel Chorale, with soloists and orchestra. Commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, the featured work will be J. S. Bach's Reformation Cantata, BWV 80: Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott. (A Mighty Fortress is our God.)
This cantata was composed in Leipzig for Reformation Day, October 31. Based on Martin Luther’s hymn of the same name, Bach scored this piece for 4 soloists, four part chorus and orchestra.

Additional works performed in this concert include:

J. S. Bach’s motet, Jauchzet dem Herrn, Alle Welt, (Praise the Lord, All the World: Psalm 100) BWV Anh.160, probably arranged by Bach from a motet by Georg Philipp Telemann, now lost.

Michael Praetorius’ arrangement of Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir (From Deep Need I Cry to Thee), a German translation from the Latin Psalm 130, for double chorus of eight voices.

and two short works:

Heinrich Schütz: Ein Kind ist uns geboren (A Child to Us is Born: Isaiah 9:6,7), SWV 302, a chorus in a new English edition by San Gabriel Chorale member WIlliam Hunt.

Heinrich Schütz: Jauchzet dem Herrn (Praise the Lord: Psalm 100), a motet for double chorus of eight voices, without accompaniment.

This concert also celebrates Dr. Bruce Cain's twentieth year as Director of the San Gabriel Chorale.
