The third concert in La Follia's all-Bach concert season is a reprise of one of its most popular programs ever: Bach's concertos for one, two, three, and four (!) harpsichords. Performing are director Keith Womer, Lenora McCroskey, Jeffrey Jones-Ragona, and William Cory, with the La Follia string ensemble.

Keith Womer will give a lecture twenty minutes before curtain about the harpsichord and Bach’s pioneering concertos for it, with demonstrations at the keyboard.

More detail

Bach was likely the first composer to write concertos featuring the harpsichord. He certainly wrote the most harpsichord concertos (thirteen known). These were often arrangements of his orchestral works, and probably performed over a ten-year period at his weekly secular concerts at Zimmerman’s Coffee House in Leipzig. The energy and visual splendor of multiple harpsichords in concert must have thrilled audiences as much then as they do now.

The program includes the solo harpsichord concerto in A major; the concerto for two harpsichords in C minor (an arrangement of his famous two-violin concerto); the concerto in C major for three harpsichords; and the concerto for four harpsichords (a brilliant arrangement of Vivaldi's concerto for four violins.) All are accompanied by the La Follia string ensemble.

Founded in 1980, La Follia is one of Austin’s oldest chamber ensembles of any kind. Among its numerous awards are the 2016 Austin Critics Table award for Ensemble Performance as well as three awards by the Austin Chronicle and KMFA for concerts cited as one of ten best classical music events of the year in Austin.

Redeemer Presbyterian Church is located in the revitalized area of East Austin, not far from the Metrorail MLK station. There is free, ample and safe parking adjacent to the church. The venue offers excellent acoustics and sight lines, and is ADA compliant.
