About

By the eighteenth century, the term cantata generally referred to one or two specific musical genres, but in earlier times it simply referred to any piece meant to be sung, usually with instrumental accompaniment.

It is in the spirit of that earlier definition that we present a selection of Baroque works for choir and orchestra, with music from Bach, Buxtehude, Jerúsalem, and featuring Charpentier's regal Te Deum.

Informal, 20-minute pre-concert talk begins at 7:30pm.

$25 General Admission, $20 Senior Admission, $10 Student Admission with ID

  • Name: Austin Baroque Orchestra & Chorus
  • Now in its fourth season, the Austin Baroque Orchestra Chorus is a Central Texas-based orchestra and chorus dedicated to presenting historically informed performances of musical works from the 17th and 18th centuries.

With programming that is both innovative and carefully researched by the artistic director, the ensemble’s mission is to promote early music in Central Texas. Each season features a series of four to six concerts of orchestral, choral-orchestral, and chamber works. These diverse concerts can vary from a cappella Renaissance motets to large-scale Baroque cantatas, and from Classical-era chamber music to larger orchestral works. Preceding each concert is an informal talk about the music led by founder and artistic director, Billy Traylor.
