About

Saturday, March 28th at 2:30pm, the Beerthoven Concert Series at the Austin Saengerrunde will be presenting a joint concert featuring Schubert’s German Mass. In addition, chamber groups featuring highly skilled instrumentalists from the University of Texas will present Mozart’s Serenade No. 12 in C Minor, K. 388 and other works of chamber music. Refreshments and hors d'oeuvres will be enjoyed during the show. All will take place at Saengerrunde Hall, 1607 San Jacinto Blvd Austin, Texas 78701

Pianist Daniel Swayze, Director of the Beerthoven Concert Series, has arranged for the Schubert Mass to be performed with its original accompaniment: an ensemble of eleven wind instruments including clarinets, oboes, bassoons and low brass. The choir will be directed by Chris Oelkers and composed of members of the Austin Saengerrunde and the visiting New Braunfels Gemischter Chor Harmonie. Members of UT's prestigious Trombone Choir will open the show with works by Bach and Mozart, followed by a woodwind octet featuring Mozart's C Minor Serenade.

According to Mr. Swayze, "The Beerthoven Concert Series is both experimental and derivative; it seeks to revive the personal, sociable and intimate fashion in which music was experienced during the time of Mozart and Beethoven in a way that is rarely found in professional classical concerts today."

Like in previous Beerthoven events, all refreshments will be included in admission. Tickets at $20 online at BrownPaperTickets.com (coming soon) and $25 at the door. For more info visit http://www.saengerrunde.org or call 512.666.SING.

  • Name: The Austin Saengerrunde
  • In 1852, German settlers in Austin formed a traditional singing group. On February 8, 1879, the group officially organized as a singing society bearing the name "Saengerrunde". The Saengerrunde is the oldest ethnic organization in Austin. Scholz Garden, a beer garden established in 1867 by German immigrant August Scholz, became a favorite meeting place for Saengerrunde members. The Scholz Garden property, originally owned by Lemp Brewery of St. Louis, included a dance hall and bowling alley as well as the restaurant and beer garden. In 1904, the Austin Saengerrunde club leased the property from Lemp Brewery and in 1908 purchased the entire property. Under the stewardship of the Austin Saengerrunde, the combined facilities have continued to provide an atmosphere that encourages members and guests to preserve and enjoy the German heritage.
