Nico Muhly is one of the most acclaimed and in-demand American composers. At 33, he is one of the most prolific composers, having written in most mediums - orchestral works, small ensembles, choral music, film music, an opera, he has worked in the pop realm, as well.

He is in Austin for the world premiere of his brand new work, How Little You Are. It is written for three guitar quartets, and a chorus. The performance is April 18 at Bass Concert hall, and will feature the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, Texas Guitar Quartet, and the Dublin Guitar Quartet, as well as Conspirare - a Company of Voices. The chorus will sing from historical texts that Texas pioneer women wrote during the westward expansion. (We have posted those texts here).

Muhly took time out of his busy schedule to talk with KMFA's Dianne Donovan about the premiere. He talks about drawing inspiration from diaries of the first Western settlers, and what it is like to coordinate three separate guitar quartets. When asked about the future of classical music? Muhly will keep on creating it, and will let the internet argue about it's "demise."

The world premiere will take place Saturday, April 18 at Bass Concert Hall, presented by Texas Performing Arts, Conspirare, and Austin Classical Guitar. You can also hear the performance in a live broadcast right here on KMFA 89.5 on Saturday night at 8 p.m.
