A year ago, KMFA launched a new program, Night Music, weeknights from 10 p.m. to midnight. With musical selections curated by music director Chris Johnson, and lyrical and literary snippets interspersed in Carmel O’Donovan’s beautiful British accent, the show has become a great favorite with listeners easing their way toward the end of the day. So we are pleased to announce that the week of January 4, 2016, Night Music will be extended to a full seven-day schedule, running weekends as well as Monday through Friday. This broadens even further KMFA’s commitment to distinctive, non-syndicated programming that is created right here in Austin, on this community’s classical music station.

At the same time, we continue to offer fresh and interesting programming from around the country. Here are some new items in our weekend lineup for 2016:

Santa Fe Chamber Music returns on Saturdays at 10 a.m., replacing the now-concluded season of chamber music from Spoleto USA.

With the Met Opera season in full swing Saturdays at noon, Icons of Broadway now airs Saturdays at 5 p.m., followed at 6 p.m. by a new season of programs from the acclaimed Gilmore Piano Festival.

We’re excited to present Living American Composers: New Music from Bowling Green, spotlighting works by David Lang, Jennifer Higdon and David Dresher among other leading composers who write and perform regularly at the outstanding Bowling Green New Music Festival. Living American Composers will air Saturdays at 9 p.m.

These expanded offerings do mean that some of the local shows like Choral Classics, Film Score Focus, and Ancient Voices will now air once per week, instead of twice. However, these shows are uploaded each week to the KMFA website where you can listen at your own convenience, and as many times as you’d like! The show pages often include extended interviews, bios, and links to more information about what you’re hearing.

Our daytime listening continues to bring you the hosts you know and enjoy, and we look forward to a year of musical exploration with you. Please keep your requests and feedback coming!
