About

What are you doing Valentine's Weekend? Bring your date (or meet someone!) to the world premiere of a song cycle about online dating!

In Real Life will feature Mela Sarajane Dailey, Soprano and Martha M. Ahern, Pianist, presenting a world premiere of commissioned song cycle for soprano and piano by Grammy- ballot composer Robert Paterson and lyricist David Cote. "In Real Life" is about online dating as experienced by five extraordinary women: often humorous, sometimes heart-breaking. Additional selections to fit the theme for Valentine's Day will be presented by Scott Wallace, Crystal Paull, and others who are featured soloists with KMFA FM 'Icons of Broadway' program.

Grammy-Ballot Composer Robert Paterson and David Cote, lyricist, developed this piece specifically for Austin Chamber Ensemble's 35th Season and for Artistic Director & Pianist, Martha Mortensen Ahern and Mela Sarajane Dailey, soprano. At the end of the concert, audiences will have a chance to hear Paterson, Cote and the artists discuss the evolution of this work.

Presenter Details

  • Name: Austin Chamber Ensemble
  • The Austin Chamber Ensemble was formed in 1981 as a wind quintet. It began with a series of six concerts in 1985 as a tribute to the Texas Sesquicentennial with the "Six Flags Over Texas" concerts featuring composers from France, Spain, Texas, Mexico, the Confederacy, and the US. These were performed in the Elizabeth Ney Museum and included Austin Chamber Ensemble members and guest artists.

Although the Austin Chamber Ensemble initially had a wind quintet as its core ensemble, it has gradually branched out to include all instrumental and vocal combinations in its concerts. In addition to the Austin series, the ensemble has given concerts, master classes and school concerts in many Texas cities as part of the Texas Commission on the Arts touring program. In December of 1993 the ACE Wind Quintet was honored to be selected out of 300 groups to perform for the New Year's Fest in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and in June of 1994 for the Birmingham, Alabama City Stages Festival. In addition, ACE has been featured on Austin radio stations KUT FM and KMFA FM presenting interviews and live performances.

Incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1985, the Austin Chamber Ensemble has always had as major goals creative programming, performing new works, artist exchanges and educational presentations. As we celebrate our 35th season, we've commissioned a new work that will be premiered February 2016.
