Arguably it was the greatest voice to hail from Grand Rapids, Minnesota - at least her parents Frank and Ethel thought so.  She made her stage debut at age 2 and 1/2. The act was built around her and her sisters. When the family moved to California, the girls landed jobs in vaudeville, radio, and even early sound films. Blue Butterfly is one of the earliest known solo recordings of Frances Ethel Gumm. At the age of 10, George Jessel, advised her to change her last name to that of the New York World Telegram’s drama critic. A year later she changed her first name to the title of a new Hoagy Carmichael song.
