About

The Texas State University Opera Theatre presents Hansel and Gretel, a modern rendition of Englebert Humperdinck’s 19th century opera. The opera will be performed in collaboration with the Texas State Symphony Orchestra who will bring Richard Strauss’s charming score to life under the baton of Dr. Carolyn Watson. This adaptation of the famous German opera will be presented in English with projected supertitles. Dr. Josh Miller, producer and director, says “Hansel and Gretel is a war-horse for university opera programs because it allows for a host of strong female lead roles. The opera is taken from the classic Brothers Grimm's fairytale, full of scary forests and gingerbread houses. I've always wanted to direct the show in a modern context, using contemporary clothing and scenery. Our Hansel enjoys playing video games, our Dew Fairy is finding her way home after a night of partying at the disco and our witch is a smash-up of a 1960s housewife and Katy Perry's ‘California Gurls’ video.”
