THE STATE THEATRE PRESENTS:

CARRIE RODRIGUEZ'S LABORATORIO

EDICIÓN CLÁSICA

SUNDAY, APRIL 28 | 7:00 P.M. | THE STATE THEATRE

Doors: 6pm
Show: 7pm

Led and curated by singer-songwriter/violinist Carrie Rodriguez, Laboratorio is an annual four-part concert series hosted at the State Theatre in Austin, Texas. It is an immersive live performance experience that celebrates and explores Latine culture through world-class musicianship, visual arts, and storytelling. Each show features the all-star Laboratorio house band, led by Rodriguez, collaborating with different guest artists.

This Edición Clásica of Laboratorio will feature two highly lauded classical musicians: operatic vocalist Claudia Chapa and cellist Bion Tsang. In collaboration with Carrie and the Laboratorio band, Chapa and Tsang will be performing the music of some of Mexico’s greatest composers including works by Manuel Ponce, Agustin Lara, Cuco Sánchez y muchos mas. Arrangements will be by Laboratorio band member and composer, Peter Stopschinski.

Claudia Chapa, a Mexican mezzo-soprano who, among her many singing engagements, has notably performed with the Houston Grand Opera, the San Diego Opera and most recently with the Austin Opera in its staging of the first ever mariachi opera Cruzar la Cara de la Luna, was recently appointed inaugural Curator of Hispanic and Latinx programming for the Austin Opera. Bion Tsang, a renowned cellist who is Division Head of Strings at the Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music at The University of Texas at Austin, has been internationally recognized as one of the outstanding instrumentalists of his generation: among his many honors are an Avery Fisher Career Grant, an MEF Career Grant and the Bronze Medal in the IX International Tchaikovsky Competition. Mr. Tsang earned a Grammy nomination for his performance on the PBS special A Company of Voices: Conspirare in Concert (Harmonia Mundi).

This project has been funded in part by the City of Austin’s Live Music Fund Event Program.

  • THE PARAMOUNT AND STATE THEATRES ARE THE ARTISTIC HEARTBEAT OF DOWNTOWN AUSTIN, HOSTING OVER 550 EVENTS EVERY YEAR.

From one of the nation’s largest comedy festivals in the Moontower Comedy Festival—a two-week extravaganza produced from the ground up by Paramount staff—to star-studded world premieres for SXSW and Austin Film Festival, we bring the world to Central Texas. And our Summer Classic Film Series, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2024, remains one of Austin’s most beloved traditions.

But our nonprofit mission also extends beyond our venues. We reach 22,000 Central Texas students every year through award-winning Paramount Education programs in classrooms and our theatres. And our Access to the Arts program provides Central Texas nonprofits and students with complimentary admission and special artist meet-and-greets.

Through it all, we work with experts to ensure the careful preservation of these treasured monuments to Austin’s history. The Paramount is one of only 20 theatres remaining in the U.S. that is over 100 years old and still in use as a venue – and we can’t wait to see what the next century will add to our story.
