Join us for the first performance of the 2017-18 Season – a topsy-turvy takeoff on Donizetti’s comic opera “The Daughter of the Regiment.”

The story involves Marie, who after losing her parents at a young age develops an abundant fondness for singing Gilbert & Sullivan arias at the D’Oyly Carte orphanage. As a teenager, her amazing musical talents are discovered by her long-lost aunt, The Marquise de Berkenfeld.

The Marquise, a stodgy snob, unable to appreciate the marvelous music of Gilbert & Sullivan, insists that Marie study grand opera and become a diva. The Marquise hires the Duchess of Crakenthorp and her posse of opera singers to train Marie for life on the opera stage.

Will Marie become an opera diva and make her aunt happy, or will the magic of Gilbert & Sullivan win over her heart? Find out during this Sunday afternoon of music and merriment.

Musical selections will include Gilbert & Sullivan favorites from "The Pirates of Penzance," "The Gondoliers," "Ruddigore," "HMS Pinafore," and "The Mikado" - as well as grand opera classics from "La Traviata," "Carmen," and others.

The cast includes some of your favorite singers including Charissa Memrick, Janette Jones, June Julian, Jenny Ohrstrom, Jaimie Lowe, Wayne Davis, Robert Schneider, Bruno Barbosa, and Steven Maus.

• Name: Gilbert & Sullivan Austin

Gilbert and Sullivan Austin was founded with the purpose of educating the public and preserving the works of Gilbert and Sullivan. Formed in 1976, the group now boasts over 300 members and entertains and educates thousands of Central Texas residents every year.

GSA is known for its highly acclaimed annual Summer Grand Productions, performed usually in June. These productions from the G&S repertoire are fully staged, and performed with a live orchestra.

Throughout the season, GSA produces recital musical performances of G&S selections as well as songs from opera and musical theater. In addition, other special programming such as sing-alongs, celebrations and lectures are produced. Most are free to attend.

The Wand'ring Minstrels are our ambassadors to the Central Texas community. The Minstrels perform for schools, private parties, and community groups of all types. Delightfully fun shows range from lively recitals of Gilbert & Sullivan's most popular tunes to interactive, mini-productions of full operas.
