About

A bracketed NCAA basketball tournament style competition using original string quartet compositions submitted by composers and musicians worldwide. Like March Madness for the ears!

A jury of experts will select sixteen of these compositions to move on to the “Smackdown” where the audience will be directly involved in the process by texting a code to vote for their favorite piece as performed by a live string quartet. The winner of each round moves on in the tournament and the champion will receive a grand prize of $2,500 plus other items of recognition. Fun and engaging for the whole family!

The live performers will be Friction Quartet from San Francisco, CA.

Presenter Details

  • Name: Golden Hornet Project
  • Golden Hornet Project, Inc. (GHP) is an Austin, Texas based 501 (c) 3 non-profit presenting and commissioning organization founded by composer / musician / bandleaders Graham Reynolds and Peter Stopschinski. Since 1999 GHP has premiered over 60 new alt-classical works by more than 50 composers rooted in wildly different musical backgrounds. In 1999 the alt-classical movement barely existed. In 2014 it is thriving in cities around the world. Golden Hornet Project continues to be a vital member and leader of that global community and their commissions and productions strive to synchronize the rock club and the concert hall.

    MISSION:

Genre Breaking – GHP’s musical language draws from a wide array of sources, staying as blind as possible to genre hierarchies and dividing lines.
Rocking – GHP brings the energy, vitality and excitement of rock shows and venues to composed music.
Audience Friendly – GHP’s concerts create an audience to artist dialogue that has been lost in a majority of classical music.
Affordable – a sliding scale ticket price policy ensures that everyone can afford their shows. Seating is never prioritized based on economic status.

“The ambition and invention of instigators Graham Reynolds and Peter Stopschinski range from symphonies, soundtracks, to improvised super-rock. Their recordings are a catalog of their adventures crossbreeding classical futurism and punk esprit.” –Rolling Stone
