About

Santa’s whimsical elves call all music-loving good boys and girls (even those, as this author, a wee naughty) to the Wednesday Morning Music Club (“WMMC”) Holiday Coffee at 9:30 a.m. (new time) on December 20th as it celebrates the season and honors WMMC’s Associate, Honorary, and Distinguished Service Members.

Partake in the merriment and enjoy scrumptious holiday goodies as only WMMC bakers, chefs, pâtissiers, and magicians can create while joining in fine music and good cheer. At 9:30 a.m., WMMC member, Carol Koock, will gather members and guests around the piano for a hearty round of vocal holiday revelry.
The program begins at 10:00 a.m. with the masterful baritone of WMMC member, Charles Palmer, accompanied by fellow member, Kathryn Govier at the piano as they present Sweet Little Jesus Boy (Robert MacGimsey), Il est né le divin Enfant (J-R Grosjean), and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane).

Maxine Gomes, pianist and WMMC member, enthralls the audience as she lets her fingers dance across the keys when she plays Franz Schubert’s Sonata, Op. 120; Allegro moderato and Allegro.

WMMC members Rachel May (violin) and Robert Centeno (piano) make audience members hold their breaths as they play the Allegretto poco mosso from one of Cesar Franck’s best-known compositions, Sonata in A Major for Violin and Piano. This work is considered one of the finest sonatas for violin and piano ever written.

WMMC welcomes and delights in all guests, but this holiday season, a particular thrill are the talents of guest performers Joseph Shuffield, violin; Elizabeth Warren, violin; Caiti Coughlan, viola; and Hector Moreno, cello, as they perform Nikolai Myaskovsky’s String Quartet No. 6. Myaskovsky (1881-1950) wrote 27 symphonies and 13 string quartets, yet his music is largely unknown; almost inexplicable when one listens to this innovative, original, and seductive music often filled with emotion and yearning. Many musicologists consider his quartets the caliber of Shostakovich and Prokofiev. WMMC considers the contribution this foursome brings to the stage a unique and cherished gift indeed.

What better way to round out the program than a Hanukkah Medley Sing-along led by members Mary Takvan and Fran Rush with fellow member, Greta Gutman, at the piano, followed by a Christmas Sing-along, again led by Ms. Takvam and accompanied by Ms. Koock, at the piano? Won’t you join us?
