About

The call for submissions to the Golden Hornet Project’s String Quartet Smackdown II is now open!

SUBMISSIONS ARE DUE NOVEMBER 23, 2014

A follow up to the highly successful and sold-out “String Quartet Smackdown I” from late 2012, this is a bracketed NCAA basketball tournament style competition using original string quartet compositions submitted by composers and musicians worldwide. Like March Madness for the ears! A jury of experts will select sixteen of these compositions to move on to the “Smackdown” where the audience will be directly involved in the process by texting a code to vote for their favorite piece as performed by a live string quartet. The winner of each round moves on in the tournament and the champion will receive a grand prize of $2,500 plus other items of recognition.

Round 1 (Round of 16): One minute of each piece is played Round 2 (Quarterfinals): Two minutes of each piece is played Round 3 (Semi-finals): Three minutes of each piece is played Round 4 (Finals): The entire four minute piece is played

As a special bonus the selected composers will recieve a professional studio recording of their piece for their promotional use. All publishing rights remain property of the composer.

The event will take place on SATURDAY, JANUARY 24th in AUSTIN, TX and selections will be performed by San Francisco based FRICTION QUARTET.

The rules and guidelines are simple, so please follow them carefully:

1. The composition must be four (4) minutes in length, give or take a few seconds.

2. Instrumentation is standard string quartet - two violins, viola and cello.

3. Use Sibelius or similar program and create a .pdf of the score.
