- Name: The Young Performing Artist Program
In 2009, Artistic Director, Kevin Taylor, after meeting with Jack New- man of Austin Tennis Academy, noticed that young people in sports have much more training and interaction with coaches than the typical young aspiring musician. World class athletes interact with world-class mentors and teachers in their training for hours every week. Rarely can a family afford such training with music instructors. However, Taylor recognized the need to train young, aspiring Artists with increased intensity as young athletes. Thus was born “The Young Performing Artist Program,” a non-profit project of “Austin Creative Alliance,” which offers extra training, mentorship and support for promising classical guitar students .
The YPA Program provides instruction, extra training, music camps, competition preparation, music festivals, master-classes, resume enhance- ment and college application assistance to promising, pre-college guitarists. Since its beginning in 2010, the Young Performing Artist Program students have had over a dozen major awards in significant youth music competitions, have been offered over $80,000 in University scholarships, and have given over 50 performances in the community, bringing their unique Art music to the business world, hospitals, retirement centers, libraries, church services, and supporting other groups like Victim Services of Travis County, Ballet Austin, Austin Shakespeare Theatre, and numerous community concerts like this one.
