SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, SAROFIM SCHOOL OF FINE ARTS PRESENTS
AN EVENING OF MUSIC RESILIENCE, MEMORY, AND HOPE
CELLO RECITAL BY FACULTY ARTIST HAI ZHENG & FRIENDS
JANUARY 31, 2026 | 7:30 P.M. | ALMA THOMAS THEATER
An evening of music honoring resilience, memory, and hope
Faculty Concert featuring Hai Zheng (cello), Dr. Jeanne Hourez (piano), and Dr. Bruce Cain (baritone)
It is our privilege to present the world premiere of Jason Hoogerhyde’s new composition for cello and piano, commissioned by Hai Zheng with the generous support of Mr. and Mrs. Donald and Diane Loewe. This evocative new piece explores contrasts of shadow and light, reminding us of the beauty that can emerge even from life’s most difficult passages.
Alongside this exciting premiere, the program also features Ernest Bloch’s heartfelt Prayer, Supplication, Jewish Song and Méditation Hébraïque; selections from Donald McCullough’s moving Holocaust Cantata: Songs from the Camps -No. 7 The Train and No. 11 Tempo di Tango; and John Williams’ Elegie for Cello and the unforgettable Theme from Schindler’s List. Together, these works invite reflection, remembrance, and renewal, offering moments of deep sorrow, profound resilience, and enduring hope.
