Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921) was a French composer of the 19th century who wrote in a wide variety of genres, including symphony, instrumental and piano concertos, opera, sacred music, and chamber music. He produced a number of choral works and oratorios, two of which are on the program for our fall concert. Both these works also feature our organist, Dr. David Polley, and the fine instrument in the Lois Perkins Chapel at Southwestern University.
The Christmas Oratorio Op 12 was written in 1858 for organ, soloists and chorus as a musical interpretation of the Christmas event starting with the Annunciation and proceeding through the joy of the promise now fulfilled and a final hymn of praise.
The Messe Op 4 was written in 1855 for organ, soloists and mixed chorus. Starting with the Kyrie and proceeding through Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei, this work follows the Mass format well known in many great choral works.

Kenneth Sheppard founded the San Gabriel Chorale in fall of 1988 in response to repeated requests that he resume the tradition of the Central Texas Chorale, which he had conducted during the 1970's and early 1980's. Since then, the group has rehearsed and normally performs at Southwestern University, to which the Chorale is deeply indebted for its support.
In 1994 Dr. Sheppard became Artistic Director Emeritus, and has been succeeded by a series of gifted conductors, with Dr. Bruce Cain assuming leadership in 1998 and extending through the present. The ensemble has performed extensively in Georgetown, Austin and New York City. San Gabriel Chorale normally presents two or three concerts a year independently, and has been featured at almost all the eleven annual finale events of the Georgetown Festival of the Arts.
