FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Transgender Education Network of Texas to sponsor 2018 Austin Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) at the George Washington Carver Museum, Cultural and Genealogy Center

Austin, TX –10/14/2018 - The TDOR is an international annual vigil to memorialize transgender murder victims killed because of transphobia. The 2018 Austin TDOR will be on Tuesday 11/20 6:30pm, at the George Washington Carver Museum, Cultural and Genealogy Center, 1165 Angelina St, Austin, TX 78702.

The transgender community will gather to memorialize those killed for being gender diverse. Gender diverse people are more visible, and more accepted, than ever. Yet, along with the increased visibility, the bigotry and violence towards transgender people, especially transgender women of color, has continue to ratchet up. As well, the number of anti-transgender legislation, regulations, and executive orders have grown alarmingly. "TDOR is an event that provides a necessary gathering space for all in our community to mourn the loss of the people we have lost this year," says Rocky Lane, chairperson of the 2018 Austin TDOR and TENT board of director member. "It is an opportunity to honor their memory, share our stories through poetry, speaking, and music and to find the strength to continue to fight for a future where there is no longer violence against trans people."

Many other LGBTQiA+ organizations in the Central Texas area are also sponsoring the Austin TDOR, including allgo, Human Rights Campaign (HRC), Equality Texas, PFLAG Austin, Out Youth, etc. Also, AT&T League and the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) have stepped up and demonstrated their commitment to this cause. All demand with one voice that society pay attention to these murders, that gender diverse people are afforded the same respect and safety as everybody else, free from prejudice, threats, discrimination, and violence.

The Transgender Education Network of Texas (TENT) is a statewide trans led and focused organization dedicated to furthering the gender diverse equity in the State of Texas. They work to accomplish this through education and networking in both public and private forums. Through their efforts, they strive to halt discrimination through social, legal, legislative and corporate education. Transgender Education Network of Texas is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
