About
The Classical Artists Concert Series presents a recital by pianist Joseph Choi.
Joseph Choi, born on the island of Oahu in the state of Hawaii, started his studies of the piano at the age of six with Ellen Masaki. Surrounded by musicians in his immediate and extended family, Joseph was raised with music ringing in his being.
Shortly after his debut with the Honolulu Symphony at the age of ten, Joseph moved to Austin, Texas. There he studied with his mentor Anton Nel since the age of fifteen, finishing his Bachelor’s degree at the University of Texas at Austin. During his time there, he had the honor of playing with orchestras such as the Austin Symphony Orchestra and the University of Texas Symphony Orchestra. Moving to New York City, he graduated from the Juilliard School with his Master’s degree under the tutelage of Matti Raekallio and Jerome Lowenthal. Joseph has performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall (Zankel) and the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.
Winner of several competitions including second prize in the NTD International Piano Competition, second prize in the Tuesday Musical Club Competition in San Antonio, and the winner of the Board of Regents Outstanding Student Award in Arts and Humanities, Joseph has gone on to establish himself in the United States as a formidable musician and artist.
An advocate of music reaching younger audiences, Joseph often performs for local schools. As a winner of the Austin Symphony Young Artist competition, he performed for middle and high schools in the Austin area. Most recently, he has been invited to perform in the Outstanding Artist Series at the LBJ/LASA High School in Austin, where a live CD/DVD recording was made. He hopes to one day be able to implement group piano classes in public education systems as one of many ways to communicate and share with other people his joy and love for music.
Another passion outside of music is cycling. As a pianist, Joseph is an advocate in the idea of the musician being an athlete. He strongly believes in taking care of his physical being so that he is able to produce music and connect mind, spirit and body. Cycling is one of these avenues he enjoys to balance the time spent indoors honing his craft.
There have and will be times where Joseph wrestles with the piano in making music, however these struggles do not compare with his innate desire to create art and cater to the soul through sound and silence.
