About

Please join the Austin Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Dr. David Oertel on Wednesday May 9, at 8PM for a free Spring Concert featuring the Overture to “La Gazza Ladra” by Gioacchino Rossini, an opera featuring a thieving magpie; the Overture to Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 1, Ludwig van Beethoven’s somber and beautiful second movement of his Symphony no. 7, the lively pizzicato Scherzo movement of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, and the world premiere of “Ozymandias, A Tone Poem” by APO cellist Edward Sledge, a contemporary piece based on a sonnet written by English poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, referring to the inevitable decline of leaders of empires and their pretensions to greatness; inspired by a great statue of Ramses II slowly eroding in the sand.
