SOUND IN SCULPTURE
April 20 | 6:00 p.m. | Di Suvero's Sculpture
Presented in partnership with Texas Performing Arts, Landmarks, and students from the Butler School of Music Composition Department
Sound in Sculpture is a showcase of original music composed and performed by students from the Butler School of Music inspired by works in the university’s public art collection. Each premiere performance takes place against the backdrop of the site-specific work of art that inspired the piece.
Butler School of Music Composers:
Josiah Garza
Joe Jaxson
Rita Yung
Jinghong Zhang
The students will present compositions inspired by two works from Landmarks' collection: Mark di Suvero's Clock Knot, a towering painted steel sculpture outside the Chemical and Petroleum Engineering building; and Sarah Oppenheimer's C-010106, one of the newest additions to the Landmarks collection that pushes the boundaries between sculpture and architecture while reorienting the spaces we inhabit. The compositions will reflect a variety of styles and modes, with works ranging from a dance accompanied by electronic music to a mixed ensemble of saxophone and percussion.
The April 20 performance will begin at 6 p.m. at the site of di Suvero's sculpture, located at 200 East Dean Keeton St, off of Speedway. Audiences will then walk a short distance to the Oppenheimer installation on the Peyton Yates Family Bridge at the Gary L Thomas Energy Engineering Building. Visitors may park at the Speedway Garage, nearest to the Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Building, or at any other available UT garage.

Works of public art have the capacity to resonate deeply, stimulate curiosity, and inspire the imagination in unexpected ways. At The University of Texas at Austin, the public art collection is one of the most distinguishing features of the main campus, shaping impressions and offering a distinctive setting for memorable experiences.
As the university’s public art program, Landmarks enriches the lives of students and visitors by presenting art that is broadly accessible and free to all. Some fifty works of modern and contemporary art are throughout the 433-acre campus and viewed by thousands of people every day.
For many, the collection provides an introductory opportunity to discover great works of art. By creating equitable pathways to meaningful engagement, Landmarks reflects the complex audiences we serve and celebrates our differences.
